Chonky Boys: The Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches that Scream Summer!

Image
Featuring my thick and nuggy Chonky Boy Chocolate Chip Cookies, these ice cream sandwiches are the stuff that summer dreams are made of.  If you've ever had the Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich at Disneyland , you are going to LOVE these!  These big and bold chocolate chip cookies are based on a recipe from my culinary school studies at Auguste Escoffier, but with a few modifications to give them that Jennuine touch.  They make the perfectas book for a fat slice of real vanilla bean ice cream.  And those mini chips?  You just gotta have that extra cronch! Thank goodness this recipe only makes 8 sandwiches, otherwise I would be eating them for breakfast lunch and dinner.  This way, my big family can help save me from my inner child diet-saboteur.   Print With Image Without Image Chonky Boy Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches Yield: 8 Author: Jenn Erickson Loaded with chocolate chips and buttery, brown-sugary vanilla flavor, these mall-sized cookies form a perfect partnership with a

Elmer's Glue Crew ~ Be Creative, Support Education & Recycle too!

I can't think of a better kind of project than one that allows you to be creative, support education, and be good to the earth at the same time.

When I heard about this Bag It Forward campaign from Elmer's, I jumped at the chance to support my local school and the Glue Crew Recycling Program.

Using Elmer's foam board and a mini basketball backboard from Walmart, I created this fun recycling box that shows that "Recycling is a Slam Dunk for the Earth"!

You'll find step-by-step photos and instructions below, but first, I'd like to share 3 ways to do good with Elmer's:

1.  Bag it Forward (Anyone can do it):  "#BagItForward is a movement and a call to action. People across the country have joined together to help provide quality school supplies for the children and teachers in their local communities. On average, teachers spend $356 of their personal money on quality school supplies every year. By simply picking up an extra bag of school supplies for a child or teacher in your life, you can make a huge impact!" (source:  Elmer'sSo, how do you "Bag it Forward"?  Next time you're out shopping, pick up some extra school supplies to donate to a local classroom -- easy as that.

2. Glue Crew Recycling Program (Parents, Teachers and Students): The program starts by placing a collection box in a classroom.  Students wash, then deposit their empty glue sticks and bottles in the box.  When the box is full, it can be dropped off at a Walmart store or sent, at no charge, through UPS to TerraCycle.  You can read more specifics and details HERE.  The Glue Crew site has ideas for creative collection boxes, lesson plans and classroom projects, and even ways to win prizes for your school.

3.  Elmer's 1st Day App (Parents):  This free app allows you to take photos of your child's special moments, add captions, create albums and share with family and friends.  For every photo uploaded, Elmer's makes a donation to the Kids in Need Foundation.   You can read more about Elmer's 1st Day HERE.

Here's a quick little tutorial on how I made the basketball style Glue Crew recycling box.  I hope you'll be inspired to give it a "shot" yourself and that you'll spread the word about these wonderful programs!

Basketball Themed Collection Box

Materials
1 mini basketball hoop toy
2 Elmer's foam boards
1 X-ACTO knife
A yardstick
Pencil
Paint
Painter's Tape
Elmer's Craft Bond Foam Mounting Tape

Step 1:  Decide on a size for your box.  The front and back panel of my box were based on the width of the mini basketball backboard.  Use a yardstick  and pencil to measure and outline a bottom and sides for your box.  The back piece will be the tallest.  Use an X-ACTO knife with a fresh blade to cut the pieces from the foam board.

Step 2:  Use the painter's tape to tape the box together, creating tight seams.

Step 3:  Arrange foam mounting tape on the back of the backboard.

Step 4:  Attach backboard to the foam board and attach net to hoop.

Step 5:  In a well-ventilated area, paint the box, hoop, net and all.  I used a quick-dry spray paint and applied 3 coats.

Step 6:  Decorate the box.  I used the Elmer's Glue Crew graphic and a graphic I created on my own to make custom stickers by printing on full-sheet labels.  You can also print on regular copy paper and adhere with an Elmer's extra-strength glue stick.

Step 7:  Outline (and reinforce) the box with a final layer of painter's tape.

I purchased both the supplies for the box...

...and quality school supplies for the classroom donation from Walmart.  You can read more about my experience HERE.

Today, I popped the donations in the basketball-themed box...

...and presented the donation and the Glue Crew Recycling Program to Mrs. Cina's second-grade class!
