Chonky Boys: The Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches that Scream Summer!

Image
Featuring my thick and nuggy Chonky Boy Chocolate Chip Cookies, these ice cream sandwiches are the stuff that summer dreams are made of.  If you've ever had the Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich at Disneyland , you are going to LOVE these!  These big and bold chocolate chip cookies are based on a recipe from my culinary school studies at Auguste Escoffier, but with a few modifications to give them that Jennuine touch.  They make the perfectas book for a fat slice of real vanilla bean ice cream.  And those mini chips?  You just gotta have that extra cronch! Thank goodness this recipe only makes 8 sandwiches, otherwise I would be eating them for breakfast lunch and dinner.  This way, my big family can help save me from my inner child diet-saboteur.   Print With Image Without Image Chonky Boy Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches Yield: 8 Author: Jenn Erickson Loaded with chocolate chips and buttery, brown-sugary vanilla flavor, these mall-sized cookies form a perfect partnership with a

Movie Magic: Oz the Great & Powerful Inspired Headbands ~ Glinda & Evanora

My family enjoyed Disney's
OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
when we saw it in the theater back in March.
We were enchanted by the vividly beautiful sets and costumes
that made the magical land of Oz come alive before our eyes.

It was a treat to revisit the magic of Oz this past weekend
with an advanced copy of the
During our second "adventure" in the land of Oz,
we picked up on more details and made some new
connections between the world of Oscar "Oz" Diggs in
Kansas and the amazing world of Oz.

After the movie, I sat down with my daughter and her friend to make some fanciful headbands based on two of the film's most powerful female characters:  Glinda and Evanora.

Rather than full headpieces or crowns, we scaled back our accessories to be more tween friendly.  Here's what the girls and I came up with:

For Glinda, we chose a simple white headband.  To mimic the corrugated look of her crown we looked to the pantry where we found gold cupcake liners.  We picked up an opalescent cabachon from the craft store for Glinda's signature stone.

For Evanora, we used a black headband accented with black feathers.  Try as we might, we couldn't locate any feathers with an emerald sheen, so we brought Evanora's signature stone into the headpiece.

The headbands took less than 15 minutes to put together, and it was a fun way to make some magic of our own after "visiting" Oz!

If you're planning an Oz themed party, or will be enjoying it with some girlfriends or the family, you can make some headbands in advance, or set out a table of supplies for after the film.  Here's what to do:

Oz the Great and Powerful
Glinda-inspired Headband Tutorial

Materials
  •  White, silver or gold headband
  • 2 pieces of felt (2.75" x 1")
  • 1 piece of tulle (10" x 2.5")
  • 1 Large gold foil muffin/cupcake liner
  • 1 small gold foil muffin/cupcake liner
  • 1 opalescent jewel or cabochon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Step 1:  Cut petals from the large cupcake liner.  Our top piece was 9 ridges wide.  Our middle two pieces were 5 ridges wide.  The final piece was 7 ridges wide.  From the small muffin cup, we cut a piece with three peaks (see picture below).

Step 2: Glue one piece of felt to the underside of the headband (approximately 2" up from the bottom of one side).  Glue second piece of felt on top, sandwiching the headband in between.  Run a small bead of glue along the bottom edge of the felt.  Attach one end of the tulle to the glue.  Run a small line of glue down the center of the felt pad.  Ruffle the remaining tulle in place along the glue.

Step 3:  Glue the petals in place as pictured below.  The last step is to glue the stone in place.  Headband is ready to wear.

Oz the Great and Powerful
Evanora-inspired Headband Tutorial

Materials
  •  Black headband
  • 2 pieces of felt (2" x 2")
  • 1 bunch of black feathers (we used an inexpensive boa from the craft store)
  • 1 gold filigree bezel or frame
  • 1 green jewel or cabochon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Optional:  E6000 for attaching the findings

Step 1:  Glue one piece of the felt to the underside of the headband (approximately 2" up from the bottom of one side).  Glue second piece of felt on top, sandwiching the headband in between.

Step 2:  You can glue the feather on the top felt piece before before or after.

Once the feathers are in place, look for gaps.  Fill in so that the plume has a full and even shape.

Step 3: Glue the filigree piece in place at the base of the feathers.  We found that the hot glue tended to squeeze through and dry white.  Use a jewelry glue like E6000 if you'd prefer a cleaner look.  To finish the piece, glue the emerald jewel in place.

I hope you'll feel inspired to take your own magical journey in the land of OZ! You can find more information on the Blu-Ray Combo Pack Release release HERE.
